CHAPTER 13

“Is it OK if Xena comes over after work?” Abigail Rose asks Mabel.

“Of course.”

“Can we hang out in the store?” Abigail Rose looks around the room. She’s been uneasy all day.

Frankie texted her after the party. He reminded her that if she tells Mabel about what went down between them, Mabel’s probably just going to sell the Barn of Mayhem before Abigail Rose even gets to script her first show.

“What’s percolating up there?” Mabel asks, tapping her own head. “And don’t try to say nothing. I know that face well enough to know when you’re scheming.”

“Not scheming,” Abigail Rose says, putting her hand on Mabel’s shoulder. “Planning.”

“You should be a politician, kid,” Mabel says. “’Cause you’re full of shit.” Mabel looks at me. “You can hang out down here, but don’t go in the basement. I’ve got everything exactly where I need it.” Abigail Rose rolls her eyes. “It’s not a mess if you know where everything is,” Mabel says with a self-satisfied huff, and then she heads downstairs to her Mouse-o-Mania headquarters.

Abigail Rose pulls the spell box out of her backpack and opens her notebook to a list of needed supplies. It’s the midday lull around lunchtime, so the shop is even emptier than usual.

“Do you think it’s actually going to work?” I ask.

“Morgan has never let me down.” Abigail Rose’s unshakable faith in things like fate, in people like Morgan—even in me—it’s unnerving. But part of me hopes it’s contagious.
